If I could have one wish, it would be for you to be sitting on this train with me. We would probably be recounting our amazing weekend in Madrid. We would laugh at our luck. How were we able to find such a great apartment in the center of the city with a balcony overlooking Calle Atocha? How did we end up watching the Real Madrid soccer game with Federico and his father while snacking on jamón ibérico and chorizo? This is the Spain I imagined.
It’s amazing how much you can learn in just a few short hours sitting around a living room discussing sports. They aren’t lying to you when they say Spaniards love their soccer. 2 goals in two minutes and Mr. Moran was almost jumping from his seat, “VAYA TOALLA!” Fede’s father is great.
Just looking around the apartment, you could tell that the Moran’s are a successful family. Beautiful art. Books lining the walls. A globe with marks representing travels. Turns out that Mr. Moran is a bio chemistry professor at the University of Madrid. He also does a lot of work at Stanford in California.
And Fede… What a great person. After meeting him and his friends only about a month ago, he insisted on helping us find a good place to stay in Madrid. He insisted that we let him take us around and show us the Madrid night life. After the game he got up from the couch and walked out of the room. Two minutes later, we hear music blasting in the other room. Sam, Jenna, and I peak around the corner to see what his doing… He was ironing his jeans in the kitchen… Ironing jeans… what a novelty.
Changing subjects…We managed to cram a lot of activity into just a short weekend. Highlights include Córdoba, the Prado Museum, el Museo de la Reina Sofia, strolling through el Retiro Park, Kapital (7 floor dance club), visiting the royal palace, and spending time with my parents!!! Although I still don’t think my parents have accepted the inevitability of me marrying a Spanish man, I think they are just about ready to move to Spain with me. I can’t even begin to describe how thrilled I was to see them. Words and pictures just aren’t enough. For them to truly understand my experience, they had to come here. Recommendation to everyone reading this: Study Abroad (I don’t care what you have to do to make it work… Make it work! It will absolutely be the best experience of your life).
Since arriving in Spain, I’ve had a lot more appreciation for museums. It used to astound me how some people at museums could stand in front of one painting for a half hour. Yesterday that was me. I loved seeing Picasso’s “Guernica.” Who would have guessed it was so big? I really like Picasso’s work. I loved seeing all of the paintings that I have learned about in class. Is it bad that I know more Spanish history than American history?
On another note, I’m going to be living in NYC this summer!!! Friday night I had a phone interview with MTV Tr3s. This internship is the perfect match for me. I will be doing marketing research on the latino market.
Although I think my heart might shatter when I have to leave Spain, it just means I’ll be moving on to the next exciting adventure. And I can say without a doubt, I will be back.
I apologize for the haphazardness of my blog entries. It’s hard to focus my thoughts when I have so much to say.
I wish you were here with me.
